Dubbo Guide
An agricultural village originally, today Dubbo has grown into a destination boasting lively entertainment and a quiet, rural feel. From sports to concerts to food, Dubbo has something for everyone.
- Dubbo has become the “sporting city,” known for a variety of athletic events, from hockey to basketball to tennis.
- Beautiful, natural attractions are featured in a slew of parks and gardens. The Biodiversity Garden features a pre-European settlement Dubbo.
- A third thing to love is the wine from nearby Macquarie Valley, as well as local wineries. Red Earth Estate Cellar Door offers a wide selection of wines from its own vineyard.
Dubbo has become known for hosting sporting events, including cricket, football, netball, swimming, tennis and even hockey. Local venues include Victoria Park No 1 Oval and the Dubbo Sporting Complex. Here, major sporting events, on the state and national levels, thrill crowds year round. At the same time, Dubbo has risen in the esteem of the business community as a place to hold conferences. In 2011, it hosted a range of conferences and professional gatherings from its strategic location between states.
The open range zoo at Dubbo, spread over a 300 hectare land is an
exhilarating spot for people of all ages. Stroll across the grasslands;
hire bikes or carts to enjoy the spectacular and expansive collection of
animals from all over the world. Join in for the different talks and feeds
happening throughout the day to make your experience at the zoo an even
exciting one. Watch hippopotamuses, otters and tortoises being fed, learn
more about why lemurs enjoy basking in the sun, ask questions about
meerkats or learn about the plight of the ferocious Sumatran tigers. An
entry ticket into the Taronga Western Plains Zoo will remain valid for two
consecutive days, so you can always go back for a second visit for free!
Want to see the oldest timber slab homestead in Australia? It is located right in Dubbo and is a fun and thought-provoking attraction for both children and adults. That only scratches the surface of the historical landmarks in Dubbo, though. The city also hosts the Old Dubbo Gaol, with guided tours and theatrical performances. For a glimpse of Dubbo before European settlement, head over to the Biodiversity Garden where native grasslands transition to woodlands and wetlands.
