Founded as recently as 1968, Karratha is a relatively young Western Australian town. The name literally means 'good country' in the local Aboriginal language and this name is borne out by the surrounding spinifex and coolabah trees, which grow in abundance around the rivers and creeks of the area.

Karratha is now a major service town for industry as well as being within easy reach of the Burrup Peninsula and Karijini National Park district.
