Points of interest near Atlantis Hotel Melbourne

Captain Cook’s Cottage

The parents of the famed English adventurer lived in this home, which was brought to Melbourne from Yorkshire in 1934. It’s not known whether Captain Cook himself ever inhabited the house, but it’s an interesting bit of history nonetheless with a quaint English cottage garden and a Discovery Centre. The cottage was dismantled in Yorkshire, shipped to Melbourne, and painstakingly reconstructed, stone by stone, in its current location.

Melbourne Town Hall

Built in 1874, the Melbourne Town Hall was once the city’s premier concert venue. The building is now open for tours, which offer information about the building’s unique history including tea with the Queen in 1954 and the Beatles’ appearance on the balcony in 1964. The Town Hall also has the largest grand romantic organ in the southern hemisphere.

Old Melbourne Gaol

One of Melbourne’s more grim landmarks is the Old Gaol. The delightfully creepy old prison has rows upon rows of tiny, dank cells which have plaster models of some of the more than 130 prisoners who were hanged there. You can see Ned Kelly’s armour, as well as the actual gallows from which he was hanged. Nightly ghost tours and paranormal investigations are popular; Old Melbourne Gaols is not recommended for young children.

not fantastic

Nov 2010 - law, tasmania

Service on front desk very poor, stayed for 4 nights ,had to ask after 2 nights to have bed changed, room not serviced until 3pm,did not replace toilet paper or coffee/sugar..had to also ask for these. Location was great for transport and bed was comfortable but have never stayed somewhere where you had to ask for bed making, won't stay again.

Nice room - modern and clean

Feb 2010 - Evans, Tasmania

Only one problem experienced. When we arrived the clerk gave us our room key and when we openned the door to the room it was already occupied. The apology from the clerk was less than satisfactory.

The room was modern, clean and comfortable. Pitty the front desk service was below standard. We will stay there again as it is well located and close to train, tram for city access and bus transport to and from the airport.

Disappointing view and breakfast

Aug 2009 - annemarie noonan, albury

Disappointed by the 'continental breakfast'. I booked a city view room and had scaffolding outside our window. It was our anniversary so very disappointed and will not recommend to anyone else.

It was small, but clean

Jun 2009 - Anonymous, MELBOURNE VIC

For the price, it represented excellent value for money. I stayed with my 2 children and although our room was absurdly missing a lounge area....the two bedrooms were ample in size and immaculately clean. It's lack of living area, totally explained the fantastic rate that was offered. Bfast was continental, and for a hotel in melbourne;s cbd, it offered excellent value for money. I would recommend this hotel as above average in the 'affordable' range. Its not the grand hyatt, but then neither are the prices.
