Brunswick Guide

Brunswick Guide

As one of Melbourne's oldest suburbs, Brunswick is brimming with appeal. The inner northern suburb of Brunswick exhibits historical Victorian architecture and narrow streets while also fronting a colourful array of shops.

Delectable cuisines

Brunswick is home to the culturally and linguistically diverse. It is an eclectic mix of a bohemian crowd, tertiary students and young urban professionals. As well as being famous for its vintage clothing stores, fashion boutiques and cosy cafes, a wide range of cuisine is offered at Brunswick.

Along Sydney Road, the main road of Brunswick is the Lazy Camel, a casual dining Afghani restaurant as well as Rezah, an Afgan Kebab restaurant. Indian curries, tangy Thai food, Vietnamese broth-based noodles, Spanish paella and Japanese bento boxes are all to be found along Sydney Road.

In East Brunswick along Lygon Street, there is an assortment of restaurants offering dishes such as rustic Italian pizzas, Egyptian koshari, Nepalese Dal, Malaysian Satays and many more. Hellenic Republic on Lygon Street is particularly well-known for its homely Greek cuisine. Open for lunch and dinner as well as catering for events, this traditional Greek tavern offers an impressive menu. Offering big servings of food at a reasonable price range, signature dishes include the Saganaki with peppered figs, Taramosalata dip and Moussaka.

Environmental centre

Situated on the banks of Merri Creek in East Brunswick is one of Australia's most visited environmental education centres, the CERES Community Environment Park. Winner of Premier's Sustainability Award, CERES focuses on creating change towards sustainability through a diverse range of community based projects, activities and programs. Situated in a native bush setting with an organic farm, there's lots to see and do at CERES. You can learn about global warming, water and energy conservation, participate in the one of the many community groups such as the baking or biking group as well as enjoy the finest seasonal fare at CERES' café or shop for fresh produces at its weekly market.

Parties and festivals

Held annually since 1989, Brunswick music festival is one of Victoria's leading festivals and the city's biggest multicultural and arts event. Held over 12 days, the event is free and hosts international as well as local talents covering Celtic, world, roots, folk and acoustic genres.

Sydney Road Street Party is a day where people of multicultural backgrounds gather along the street to celebrate their peaceful and harmonious attitudes towards their culturally diverse community. It is an all-ages day of live music, kids' activities, street theatre and culinary delights.

Transport

Accommodation at Brunswick ranges from affordable apartments to stylish hotels. The quirky, relaxing Brunswick is easily accessible by tram, bus and metro. Hopping on the metro on the Upfield Line will get you to Brunswick Station.
