John F. Kennedy Memorial

Following the 1963 assassination of American President John F. Kennedy, Australian artist Raymond B. Ewers was commissioned to create a memorial to the slain President. Ewers cast a bronze bas-relief bust of JFK, set in a granite boulder, at a site in the Japanese Gardens within Melbourne’s Treasury Gardens. A bronze flagpole and paved area were added as a nod to Kennedy’s burial plot in Arlington National Cemetery.

Old Treasury

This elegant historic building, completed in 1862, is widely regarded as one of the finest 19th-century structures in Australia. The basement vaults once held the majority of the £200 million in gold that was mined from Victoria’s goldfields during the Australian gold rush of the 1850s. Today, the treasury is still used by public officials: The Governor of Victoria holds weekly Executive Council meetings here in the first floor council chamber.
