This stunning residence was begun in 1840, with near-constant renovations until 1959. The grand colonial structure has been meticulously restored by the National Trust and contains many of the personal possessions of the Armytage family, the last private occupants of the home and its longest inhabitants. The well-maintained grounds are landscaped in a style faithful to the original 19th century plans, complete with a croquet lawn and beautiful flower walks.

So impressed for the price

I came across this guest house by accident just needing somewhere for about a week between houses. I was so impressed by how clean it was. l loved the fresh clean sheets/towels and that they cleaned the bathrooms twice daily and the staff were very helpful. I stayed in both the double rooms and also the 6 room dorm and have to say both worth the money.After staying here and trying to find a similar comparison for the price I was even more impressed. Its the perfect location and if you are after somewhere homely, clean and with nice staff and people not to mention peaceful then this is the place. The staff were so great that when I asked for a different room because of a snoring neighbor they were quick to oblige. I loved too the daily breakfast, it was one less thing to think about. I consider myself a pretty fussy person, but was nicely impressed by this hotel. It is a gem and I'm so glad to have stayed there.

A little gem

I live in Australia and have travelled to many countries, staying in all classes of hotels and this establishment offers such a homely, community feel - the old fashioned service you cannot find any more in the big clinical hotels. The staff were so friendly and even though very busy, were happy to stop and chat.

It buzzed with countless travellers chatting over lovely continental breakfasts and the daily newspaper. There is even a cosy little nook with a swap library for guests, what more could you want?

Thanks for a great stay, we will be back.
