Grown from humble dirt track beginnings, this racing complex now boasts a drag strip, a multi-functional road circuit and the ‘Thunderdome’, a 1.8 km high-speed banked oval for clockwise or counter-clockwise racing. Calder Park hosts a variety of events including Australian touring car races, historics, Super Trucks, Super Tourers and Super Bikes, as well as big-name concerts and special events.
Only 2% of Victoria’s volcanic plains grasslands remain, making them critically endangered; this is why the protected Craigieburn Grasslands are so important. The area covers about 400 hectares in Melbourne’s outer north. Many endangered plants can be found here, including Curly Sedge and Matted Flax-lily. The Golden Sun moth, Plains-wanderer and striped legless lizard are just a few of the important animal and insect species that can be found in the reserve.
Travel back to Melbourne’s earliest days, where you can explore a landscape that remains virtually untouched since its first inhabitants broke ground here in the 1840s. Covering more than 700 hectares, Woodlands Historic Park has a number of natural and cultural landmarks with historic significance, including an 1840s homestead, River Red gum trees, kangaroos and wildlife, a pond walk, granite boulders and several walking and horseback riding trails.
