Prahran Guide

Prahran

Prahran is a suburb located on the south-east of Melbourne city. The suburb's name originated from a compound of two Aboriginal words, and its meaning 'land partially surrounded by water' can be explained by its proximity to the Yarra River and Albert Park Lake.

Shopping

Chapel Street is a shopping street that has always rivalled Melbourne's centre as a shopping destination. The promenade extends from the Yarra River through Prahran and ends at St Kilda. Offering a mix of upscale fashion shops and cafes that closes in the late evening, families and children can often be seen strolling along the street in their dressing gowns and slippers.

Trawl through Greville Street in Prahran to witness an eclectic mix of retailers and minimalist boutiques. Greville Street has been recognised as a trendy area in recent years with its individualist cafes, specialist music stores and groovy bars. Shops that stand out include Palm Beads, an art deco shop filled with jewellery, and Greville Records, a music shop that offers a good selection of vinyl and paraphernalia.

When you have seen enough of the cutting-edge fashion designs and giftware stores, a visit to the Chapel Street Bazaar will be eye-opening. Open seven days a week, the Chapel Street Bazaar is filled with bizarre bits and bobs from years past. Articles from 80 to 90 years ago as well as electrical gear can be found here.

Food

Like most Melbourne suburbs, Prahran is home to world cuisines. Souq Kitchen and Bar explores the fusion of Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and North African flavours and produces innovative all-day menus. Multi-award winning restaurant, Jacques Reymond is also located in Prahran. Jacques Reymond occupies a stately Victorian mansion and features extensively landscaped gardens, and of course serves extraordinary dishes. The restaurant is also known for its extensive selection of wines.

Nightlife

Boutique and Jett Black on Greville Street are great for a fun night out. 'Happy' on Saturday nights at Boutique is a night of glamour, decadence and house music. Since its establishment in July 2010, 'Happy' has fast become one of the premier nights in Melbourne. Jett Black is a venue full of mystery, ingenuity, intrigue and luxury, featuring two levels of seductive décor from custom furniture to acoustic optimised walls. With a team of dedicated staff serving you exquisite appetisers and cocktails, you can be sure your needs will be met.

Revolver Arcade on Chapel Street should not be missed. With a drum store, bar/ nightclub, restaurant, band rehearsal studio and music school all conveniently contained within its walls, it is a hub for your musical and entertainment needs. Make your way up a long and steep flight of stairs to reach the intimate bar and nightclub. What it lacks of in size, it makes up for in music. The light and sound systems are of a professional standard: party goes are assured of an adrenaline-pumping night.
