Southern Highlands Guide
The cool air of the Southern Highlands makes it the ideal region to escape from the searing heat of an Australian summer. This area of New South Wales is a favourite holiday destination for many people, particularly the citizens of Sydney.
- The primary attraction of the area is its natural beauty and that is best illustrated at Fitzroy Falls in the Morton National Park. The water plunges over eighty metres from an escarpment into the Kangaroo River.
- The park is a wildlife reserve and is filled with great bushwalk trails for you to enjoy. Wine production began in the 1980s and there are now a number of vineyards open to the public, where you can see how the wine is made and savour a taste of the viticulturist’s art.
- For the railway enthusiast and children of all ages, there is the stunning model railway in Braemar.
You can find everything from fine dining to friendly bistros and even gourmet picnics in the Southern Highlands, and all have the same quality fresh ingredients to delight your taste buds.
Every spring the area celebrates Tulip Time, a festival of flowers, music, food and the people of the area. The gardens are spectacular and it is a great time to visit the area. In early summer, roses are the featured flowers, as the Southern Highlands celebrate the Days of Wine, Arts and Roses festival. There are more gardens to tour, fifteen locations open their doors to let you try their wines and there are exhibitions of art to ensure that all your senses are stimulated.
There are natural springs in the area and you can take advantage of them by choosing a spa retreat, but there are plenty of other Southern Highlands accommodation options at a number of locations across the region. They include a range of hotels from small family run affairs to major chains. You can also choose from guesthouses, self-catering and camping.
