Birrung Gallery

Do not let the neighbourhood fool you as Birrung Gallery is a stunning showcase featuring the work of native Australian artists. More than 400 indigenous artists are represented here, as are at least 25 remote communities and tiny Aboriginal villages from all over Australia. You are free to browse the gallery during business hours, Tuesday through Friday from 10am until 5:30pm and 11am until 5pm weekends. If you want to bring home a piece of art, prices start around $100.

National Art School

The bizarre sandstone structures that make up the National Art School were once used as the Darlington Gaol. More than 700 prisoners were kept here from 1841 to 1912; 76 were hanged. Today, visitors can tour the art school campus and see the circular central building—once the prison chapel—as well as the former morgue with its morose skull and crossbones carvings. Obviously, the campus gallery is worth the trip, showcasing students’ latest masterpieces.

Rushcutters Bay Park

Massive Moreton Bay fig trees overhang this lovely spot on the water, where luxury yachts and spoiled lap dogs are regularly seen. Despite its posh pedigree, though, Rushcutters Bay Park is surprisingly unpretentious and makes a gorgeous waterfront spot for a quiet walk or run. In December, the park comes alive when the world’s best yachters gather here to prepare for the Sydney to Hobart race.

Cheapest hostel in Sydney

We searched online and found this to be the cheapest backpacker hostel in Sydney.

The staff are friendly and there's a party on the rooftop almost every night , which makes early nights impossible. This as basic as it gets - but for the price who's worried.
