The formidable Art Gallery of NSW is an influential player in Sydney’s art scene. The museum houses three permanent collections: Australian, Asian and post-16th century European. Powerhouse international touring exhibits are on offer frequently and there is much more happening throughout the year. The Sunday children’s program is very popular, as are the concerts, celebrity talks, film screenings, workshops and special events.
This old wool and cargo dock was brought back from the brink of demolition in the late 1990s and has become one of Sydney’s most posh addresses. The wharf is public and you’re free to walk around and explore, but the restaurants and bars are some of the most exclusive in the city. You may even catch a glimpse of a celebrity or two—several famous Aussies own property on the wharf.
The Sydney Jewish Museum is a living memorial to the Holocaust, examining Australia’s Jewish history, traditions and culture from the days of the First Fleet to today. The modern museum features touch-screen interactive exhibits and video testimonies. The Holocaust exhibits are sobering—don’t miss the heartbreaking Children’s Memorial. Expect to devote at least two hours to see everything, though you can also take a 45-minute guided tour.
