Coogee Guide
Coogee is located in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. Located on the water the suburb is famous for Coogee beach and is a very popular location for travellers to stay.
Unlike most Sydney ocean beaches the surf at Coogee is generally quieter thanks to Wedding Cake Island, a rocky outcrop just off the shore. This makes it a very popular beach for swimming. Each year an annual ocean swim is held where swimmers head out from the beach and around the island.
There are two surf pools at either end of the beach, including the Ross Jones Memorial Pool at the southern end of the beach just below the Coogee Surf Life Saving club.
One of the dominating buildings in Coogee is the Coogee Bay Hotel . Bars, entertainment, nightclubs, restaurants and accommodation - this hotel is generally the epicentre of Coogee nightlife and entertainment.
While Arden Street runs along the beachfront, most restaurants, cafes and shops are located on Coogee Bay Road, which runs all the way from the beachfront back up the hill to Randwick.
Tucked away at the northern end of the beach on Dolphin Street is the Beach Palace Hotel. Originally an entertainment complex built in the 1880s with pools, an aquarium and more, the Beach Palace Hotel now has seven bars and dining facilities, and regularly hosts functions and events.
Coogee is nestled between Randwick, Clovelly and Maroubra. Up until the 1960s Coogee was connected to Randwick and the rest of Sydney via trams. Buses replaced the tram network after that and continue to be the main way of getting to and from Coogee via public transport.
Accommodation in Coogee includes cheap hotels as well as higher rated establishments, and it is possible to get hotel rooms with ocean views.
