Great location, shame about the rooms and the service. Staff were rude and just plain ignored people most of the time, including when we were trying to check in. The room was old and there was no bathroom except for the unisex shower/toilet facilities down the end of the hall. It was VERY noisy all night long as there are gaps around the doors and you can hear EVERYTHING. There is only on-street parking and if you can't get a space then you better be very fond of walking as there is no public parking anywhere either. It's all on-street and traffic is terrible. Also, there are no disabled facilities, something that I don't believe is mentioned on their website. It's stairs all the way. You can't even get in the front door without going up several flights of stairs first - a challenge to anyone with some kind of physical disability. The breakfast was quite good and did redeem our time spent there to a certain extent. If we are ever in a financial pinch while going through Sydney, then we might consider staying there again, but outside of that we won't be going back.
The rooms are tiny - not enough room to move around even for slim people like us. Shared bathrooms are OK. The location is excellent - 7 minutes from Circular Quay. The cost of leaving luggage at the end of our stay was exorbitant - 7 dollars for 3 hours. That is a stingy approach after we had spent hundreds of dollars staying with them.
Glenfarrie is exactly as advertised - a clean, no nonsense guest house in an excellent area of Sydney for a decent price. Breakfasts were outstanding. Ammenities like balconies, bbq access and nice garden tables and chairs are an added bonus. The combined 2 flights of stairs from the ferry, another flight of uphill to the lodge and then as many as three flights to your room can wear you out at the end of a day so be sure to ask for lower level rooms if available. Staff was extremely helpful, internet access was convenient and the clientele was a mixed group of backpackers, middle aged couples, fathers and sons, etc. We especially liked the access in two directions for public transportation.

This historic home has been the residence of Australia’s Governor-General since 1936, when Lord Gowrie assumed his position. Harkening back to its past life as the headquarters of the Australian Naval fleet, a barracks and fortifications remain on the property, along with the stately two-storey home that features wide verandas and stoic columns. Today, the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron is also based in one of the buildings on the site.
Just east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, you’ll find Kirribilli Point. Admiralty House, the official residence of Australia’s Governor-General, is located here, as is Kirribilli House, the Prime Minister’s residence. The Gothic Revival mansion was built in 1854 and security is surprisingly lax, though it can be hard to get a good view of the house from the gates. Better views are offered from the water.
This private, members-only yacht club is located just north of Admiralty House at Kirribilli Point. Established in 1862, the grounds feature a number of historic sandstone buildings, as well as state-of-the-art sailing facilities and amenities for members and their guests. If you can’t score an invite, you can still catch a glimpse of the club from the water aboard a harbour cruise.
