Rarotonga City Guide
Rarotonga is the most populated island in the Cook Islands - a group of 15 islands in the South Pacific. With just 67 square kilometres to work with, Rarotonga packs a big punch into a tiny area!
The best sights in Rarotonga can be seen just offshore - through your very own scuba mask. The South Pacific waters are warm all year-round, making it the perfect place to check out the colourful fish and the coral reefs.
For a great outdoor adventure above sea-level, head to Te Rua Manga - also known as "The Needle". The name couldn't be more accurate, as it's a large, pointed rock that you can hike on and climb. If you're athletic enough to make it to the top, you'll be rewarded with some amazing views!
For a taste of the local culture, head to Te Vara Nui Village - a historic Polynesian village on Muri Beach. There, you'll find botanical gardens, waterfalls, and a lagoon. If you vist at night, you can eat dinner overlooking the lagoon, then watch a cultural performance on floating stages.
Most of the food in Rarotonga is seafood, Polynesian, or a combination of the two.
If you want to eat where the locals eat, head over to Cafe Ariki. It offers lots of great food at low prices. Located on Back Road, you'll have to really keep your eyes peeled for it, but the hunt is worth it!
Even though Rarotonga is a small island, there are plenty of places to stay - in practically every price range. You'll have your choice between hotels, luxury bungalows, and five-star resorts!
Just about every hotel in Rarotonga can be found on Ara Tapu - the long road that covers the entire circumference of the island.
