Hanmer Springs City Guide
Located on New Zealand's South Island, Hanmer Springs gets its name from a popular hot spring that locals discovered back in the 19th century. Today, Hanmer Springs is a popular outdoor adventure spot for people from all over the world! Since it is so close to Christchurch, Hanmer Springs also offers the perfect day trip for people who want to get out of the "big city".
You can't visit Hanmer Springs without spending some time in the hot springs themselves! The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pool and Spa is right in the middle of town. The warm waters are the perfect place for couples to relax, or for families to have a day of fun. There are both adult-only areas and even waterslides for the kids!
The town is also home to the Hanmer Springs Forest - where you can spend the day hiking or mountain biking through the bush.
If you want more of a "cool" adventure, head up into the mountains and go skiing. The Hanmer Springs Ski Area offers several different trails so that you'll have fun - no matter how much experience you have!
If you want to eat and learn more about Hanmer Springs at the same time, you can do it at The Powerhouse Cafe. Located in an old hydro-electric power station, the Cafe offers great coffee, wine, and gourmet food that you can enjoy at breakfast, brunch, or lunch.
If you want to stay near the thermal pools, look for a hotel on Amuri Avenue or Jacks Pass Road. Either one will put you within walking distance of the pools.
If you want to stay a little further from all of the hustle and bustle, there are a variety of hotels in the southern part of town.
