North Stradbroke Island Queensland Australia
Stadbroke Island is one of the larger islands in Moreton Bay at the mouth of the Brisbane River. In fact it comprises two islands - North Stradbroke Island and South Stadbroke Island.
The former is more popular with locals who refer to it as "Straddie". North Stadbroke has a rich history. It once housed a significant aboriginal community, and later the town of Dunwich successively became a convict outstation, Catholic mission, and quarantine station.
Dunwich features a museum outlining the island's history. It's open from 10 am - 2 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Otherwise just pick up a free map at the information centre and take a self-guided walk to see the historical attractions.
Nature lovers can take the North Gorge Headlands Walk to enjoy stunning views and spot dolphins, and whales gambolling in the sea.
South Stradbroke is becoming more popular and now features four camping grounds and three resorts.
