Katherine GorgeKatherine is the fourth largest settlement in Australia's Northern Territory, known for the gorge through which the Katherine river flows and its proximity to the Nitmiluk National Park.

The present town of Katherine is located at the crossroads of the Explorer's Way (Stuart Highway) from Darwin through Alice Springs to Adelaide, and the Savannah Way (Victoria Highway) from Cairns to Broome. All the hotels are on the southern side of the Katherine River gorge, just north of the main street.

The town provides good road links to Darwin (340 km) and Alice Springs (1100 km). Travellers also benefit from the twice-weekly Darwin-Adelaide Ghan rail service stop in both directions, and the charter air to Tindal RAAF base.

Katherine is a top place to base a tour of the rich natural, ancient, and largely untouched environment in the Northern Territories. There is a history of spectacular floods along the river, with 20-meter high water marks recorded in the floods of 1998 and 2006. Bushwalking, river trips and overland drives along the routes meeting in the town; Central Arnhem Road, Savannah Way, and Explorers Way, which take drivers out into the bush.
