Port Arthur Guide: Spend Less, Do More

Welcome to Port Arthur

Port Arthur CoastlinePort Arthur in Tasmania holds so much historic significance for the Australian people. It’s one of the nation’s most visited heritage sites because it was a key site in the early colonial system of convict discipline. Set against beautiful, lush landscaping; expect to get a great history lesson while you're here!

Things to do

Port Arthur Old buildingsAt the ruins of The Penitentiary, you will learn all about how prisoners lived back in the 1800's. Also be sure to tour the Separate Prison, where people lived in solitary confinement.

But Port Arthur's history isn't all about jail cells. You can also get a taste of it at the Coal Mines Historic Site. This was the area’s first operational mine, and it was where the worst class of prisoners worked. History really comes to life here when prisoners' stories get re-told!

When the sun goes down, take a ghost tour through the area. You will pass by both darkened ruins and heritage buildings. As you hear tales of old, you can decide for yourself if these ghost stories are truth or just a myth!

Many of the convicts who were sent to Port Arthur in Tasmania were in charge of helping to develop the area. To see what they did, follow the Convict Water Supply Trail beyond the green landscaping of Port Arthur and into the surrounding bushland. On this 600-metre walking tour, you will learn about the history of an ambitious engineering project that these convicts undertook to make the area a self-sufficient flour-production hub.
