Welcome to Thailand
Thailand is a diverse, warm and welcoming country with many fascinating attractions to offer visitors. Whether the focus of a trip is to explore the nation’s cultural and historical sites, experience the unique city life, or relax on the splendid beaches, there are hotels and other accommodation options available throughout the country that will meet most needs and budgets.
Top Things about Thailand
For many visitors to Thailand, the main attraction is the beaches and resorts found in the southern part of the country. Resorts in areas such as Phuket, Samui, and Pattaya draw large numbers of travellers each year because of the beauty of the local scenery, the weather, and the vibrant nightlife. This is only one part of Thailand, however, and other significant attractions are to be found further inland, such as in the cultural centre of Chiang Mai, which is also a gateway to some of the wilder parts of the Thai countryside. Bangkok is the capital and largest city in the country, and offers travellers an amazing mix of historical and cultural attractions, modern entertainment, and amazing nightlife options.
Best Cities to Visit inThailand
The first stop for many visitors to Thailand is Bangkok, with its large international airport acting as the departure point for many destinations located around the country. Bangkok hotels are plentiful, and many of them place visitors near the city’s many shrines and temples, as well as the Grand Palace and other cultural attractions. Phuket, one of the country’s most popular resort areas, tends to be much busier (and more expensive) during the high season - which runs from November to March - than it is at other times of the year. For visitors seeking more traditional Thai culture that is closer to nature, Chiang Mai - located in the mountains of Northern Thailand- is an excellent option.
Accommodation and Hotels in Thailand
Resort style hotels are common in Thailand, especially near the beaches, and this is also true in cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai, which can make life easier for tourists. However, as well as the international hotel chains and the holiday or wellness resorts, there are also smaller boutique hotels, bed and breakfasts, and other more budget-friendly accommodation options located throughout the country.
Getting around in Thailand
Getting around in Thailand can be inexpensive and efficient, if at sometimes it is slow. The choices are:
Inter town / city buses in three classes of travel
Songthaews (meaning two rows), which are share-taxis and air-conditioned minibuses
Trains – consisting of four main lines; north from Bangkok to Chiang Mai , north eastwards from Ubon Ratchathani to Surin ; the eastern line from Bangkok to Aranyaprathet at the Cambodian border. The southern Line goes via Hua Hin, Chumphon and Surat Thani, and down the west coast of Malaysia, via Butterworth.
Ferries – all the major islands are connected by ferry, but avoid overcrowded ferries which have resulted in a small number of sinking’s.
Flights – these can save you many days of travel, for example Chiang Mai to Phuketwhich is 2 hours by plane, but up to two days by bus or train.
Car rental – roads in Thailand outside of Bangkok are relatively uncongested and in good condition. Major routes are signed in English. Despite the good conditions and polite nature of drivers, there are exceptions with truck and bus drivers who dominate the road and are often high on amphetamines. Caution should be observed with these drivers, giving way to them. Approach bends with caution also as trucks and buses may be coming down on the wrong side. The other cautionary note is to avoid night driving.
Top Scenic Drive in Thailand:
The Mae Hong Son Loop in Thailand’s north is approximately 600km long and circles the beauty of Mae Hong Son Province via Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son and Pai.
The mountain scenery is spectacular and the roads are in great condition.
