Most tourist destinations in London are located north of the River Thames and Southwark is one of the few parts of the city's which attracts visitors away from locations north of the river. As with most locations in central London, accommodation is not exactly cheap, but because it is outside of the main tourist zones you will probably be able to find a hotel at a much more reasonable price than elsewhere.

The Crystal Palace Park is one of the highlights of Southwark and marks the location of where the Crystal Palace once stood before it was destroyed. This Park has several fascinating attractions, most notably the Victorian Dinosaur Park.

The South Bank, located in west Southwark, is the location of one of London's most famous attractions, the London Eye, which provides a stunning aerial view of the city.

The National Theatre is also worth a visit and hosts impressive theatrical performances throughout the year.

Arts, culture and entertainment are the real highlight of Southwark and on the South bank you will find a wide range of museums and art galleries. The Tate Modern is one of the world's most famous modern art museums and the museum’s vast Turbine Hall hosts stunning examples of contemporary works. For those with children, the Sea Life London Aquarium has a vast collection of fish sure to impress anyone.

The advantage of staying south of the river is that you will find that Southwark accommodation is cheaper than elsewhere in central London. The London Underground provides good connections to anywhere in the city and all major attractions are just a short tube ride away. Cheap hotels in Southwark are quite easy to find, and you will get more for your money than equivalent priced hotels in areas such as Notting Hill.
