2 Weeks at the Oaks

Dec 2008 - Anonymous, Canada

After a 30 hour journey, I arrived at the Oaks Plaza Pier Hotel. The ocean view room had been prepaid in full for 12 nights. They wanted an additional deposit of $1,200 to let me stay. I tried to put that on my credit card but their system was not working for any of my credit cards. They told me I could not have the room and they directed me to a pay phone somewhere across the street to try sort things out with Visa. Visa confirmed the card was good and there should be no problem using it. My car rental at the Adelaide airport 30 minutes prior worked fine. They wouldn't take a cash deposit either. After I threatened to write a terrible review for the hotel, they agreed to let me stay one night if I put up $100 cash. Lucky for me their system was fixed by the next day and I put the deposit on my Visa, otherwise I would have been kicked out and they would have kept the money I had paid for the room. They even had a preprinted sheet showing this "hotel policy." This was by far the worst treatment I have ever experienced at any hotel in the world... begging to stay in a room I'd already paid for.

Be aware that parking is $15 per day and you won't get a spot close to the hotel weekend evenings. Oaks Internet rates were a big ripoff, $250 for the 12 days.

There was lots of partying going on outside every night. There were weddings in the hotel both weekends with parties going on in several rooms, people coming and going until well after 2:00AM both Fridays and Saturdays. Something to consider if you like quiet.

The room was great except that the TV in the bedroom was so fuzzy you couldn't watch it.
