Southport Guide
Southport is a suburb of Queensland’s Gold Coast. It is a popular tourist destination for both Australians and international visitors alike.
- Scottish Prince Dive Site – The hull of the sunken ship lies ten metres down next to Southport Spit. Sunk in 1887, it is now a great adventure diving site for tourists.
- Gold Coast Seaway Dive Site – This is a fabulous place for learning how to dive. Divided into four sections, it is ideal for all levels of diver from beginner to advanced.
- Broadwater Parklands – A tremendously exciting theme park with wetlands, kiosk, pier and playground areas. It’s fun for all the family.
Australia Fair in central Southport is Australia’s biggest shopping centre and contains numerous bars, pubs, restaurants and cafes. The award-winning marina is also packed with great places to eat and drink and the views across the bay are particularly good here. The Tandoori Palace is a reasonably priced Indian restaurant and is especially noted for its courteous service. Vinnie’s Pizza Pasta Ribs is famous locally for its intimate atmosphere and delicious Italian cuisine.
There are loads of activities for families in Southport, and one of the most popular venues is Sea World, where King Penguins can be seen in the world’s largest penguin enclosure. There is a great adventure playground at Castaway Beach nearby, and kids and parents can join the Sea World Rescue team that rescues endangered species. Along the Broadway, there is attractive parkland for walks and picnics, and water sports are available along the entire coast.
There is a wide range of accommodation in Southport. There are hotels for families and independent travellers, low-priced apartments for students and backpackers, and numerous small hotels and B&Bs at a range of prices to suit different budgets.
