Vanuatu Country Guide
Europeans may have discovered it back in the 1600's, but today, Vanuatu is its own republic that lies about 2,500km northeast of Sydney. Made up of more than 80 small islands that were all formed from volcanic activity, Vanuatu offers some one-of-a-kind sights and adventures that can't be beat!
No trip to Vanuatu is complete without seeing the Tanna Yasur Volcano on the island of Tanna. It's active year-round, but you can still get close to it. The best time to visit the volcano is at dusk because you'll get a light show!
The biggest hub of activity in Vanuatu takes place in the capital city of Port Vila. There, you'll find caves, beaches, and waterfalls - all complemented by activities like parasailing, snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, and abseiling.
If you want to get a great look at Vanuatu's culture, head to the island of Malekula. That's where you'll find primitive ceremonies, ancient villages, and people who speak 28 different languages!
Most of the food in Vanuatu is very healthy. The dishes primarily revolve around fish and fresh produce! Many of the residents here grow their own fruit and vegetables right at home.
Perhaps the most famous event in Vanuatu is the annual Land Diving Ceremony that takes place on Pentecost Island. Similar to bungee jumping, men tie vines around their ankles and jump off buildings! It's all done to encourage a good yam harvest the following year. The ceremony is also considered a rite of passage for young men who live on the island.
If you want to spend some time "at one" with nature, head to Vanuatu's biggest island - Espiritu Santo. There, you'll find mountains, rainforests, tropical birds, and stunning orchids.
